Looked-After Child (LAC)

A child in the care of a local authority — given highest admissions priority at all grammar schools.

Definition

A looked-after child (LAC) is a child who is in the care of a local authority in England, or who was previously in local authority care and has since been adopted, or has become subject to a child arrangements order or special guardianship order. Under the School Admissions Code, all schools — including grammar schools — must give highest admissions priority to looked-after children and previously looked-after children. In Buckinghamshire grammar school admissions, this priority applies ahead of siblings and distance. Qualifying at 121 is still required for a looked-after child to be eligible for a grammar school place.
